J72 Overhaul Update March 2021

69023 Boiler Inside View

Boiler

Close examination of the boiler components has revealed that they are in a much poorer condition than had been anticipated from what could be established before dismantling. Several more stays have been removed this week to confirm the condition of a wider area of the wrapper sides.

Ian Storey, Neal Woods, Paul Hutchinson and Richard Pearson have all viewed the boiler (though not simultaneously) to help inform the engineering decisions which are now required, before instructing NSEL on how to proceed.

A number of costed options for repair have been provided by NSEL. The financial implications for the overhaul are being worked through and will be considered by the Project Team and by the Board.

Two drawings have been obtained from the National Railway Museum. One of the later boiler diagram, as used on our locomotive, and one showing various fastenings on the boiler. These will help with the overhaul of the boiler, as they confirm the design size and thickness of the boiler plates.

Cylinder Block

The original cylinder block halves are now at South Lincs Foundry (SLF). Pattern-making will commence soon.

Mechanical

A further set of horn guides has been machined and one set of horn stays has been welded up and await machining to suit the horn guides.

NELPG needs to invest some £225,000 to steam Joem again and a ‘Set to Steam Again’ appeal has been launched for direct donations or sponsorships.

For more details of the appeal including the opportunity to sponsor specific elements of the overhaul click here

All donations will be gratefully received.  Please, if you can, support Joem’s much needed return to steam.

Darlington Railway Heritage Quarter – NELPG and the 1861 Shed

A Press Release issued jointly by the National Railway Museum at Locomotion, Shildon and Darlington Borough Council on 5 March reported the good news that a compromise agreement had been reached over the future location of Locomotion No 1.

It went on to state though that, as part of the development by the Council of the Darlington Railway Heritage Quarter at Hopetown, NELPG will be occupying and operating the 1861 Shed on the site, along with the Darlington Railway Preservation Society. This has subsequently been reported by the railway press. However, in respect of NELPG, this is not the case. NELPG is in negotiation with Darlington Borough Council to see if the 1861 Shed can be configured to meet our needs, but has, as yet, made no commitment to move into the building. Darlington Borough Council has acknowledged that to be the case, apologised for its error, and had given an assurance that a correction had been advised to all recipients of the original Press Release. It would appear that the message did not get through to all.

Members will continue to be advised of progress with the discussions with the Council, but, if unsuccessful, the Group will have to find a new base for its locomotive overhauls, after twenty years at Hopetown.
